Believe it or not, everyone can benefit from a professional headshot! With more use of the internet and social media, your headshot is often the first impression of you or your business. Whether you’re considering a new headshot for your LinkedIn profile, your website or social media brand, or maybe you just want an image refresh, getting that perfect headshot is vital to your image.
What you wear can impact how your headshot turns out, so it's important to make mindful choices! Below are 6 wardrobe tips to consider.
1. What do you do for a living?
Think about it; your headshot should reflect the norms of your industry.
If you work in a corporate environment, a well-fitted suit or blouse is a great option. I would suggest sticking to more classic, solid colors and styles. Sometimes companies have a specific look they recommend so you can check with your company.
If you have a creative or laid-back job, you probably have more flexibility and can go with a more stylish top or add colorful accessories. Neat, clean and casual can work well for a more laid-back job!
You can always ask your photographer for their advice and together you will find the right look.
2. Keep it Simple!
I recommend keeping your clothing classic and simple to ensure the focus remains on your eyes, face and expression. I usually recommend solid colors. Neutral tones are always flattering and will keep the attention on your eyes and face. Colors like navy, black, white, and gray are classic and timeless but don’t be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone and try a bold color. Try colors that help bring out your eyes!
Things to avoid: neon colors, patterns, stripes and logos as they tend to be more distracting and though there are exceptions, usually do not photograph well for a headshot.
3. Make sure it fits!
Clothing that fits well and is comfortable will make you feel more confident during your session and this is so important! For a lot of people, being photographed is a nerve wracking experience (title for another blog). Feeling confident and comfortable in your outfit will help tremendously in settling your nerves and bringing out your best self.
You also want to make sure you can move naturally so fabrics that feel good are important to wear.
If you have a shirt that is a little loose, but the neckline is flattering or you love the color, check with your photographer, they might be able to pinch back some fabric, but clothing that’s too tight will be uncomfortable and that will show in the final images. Also, make sure your clothing is wrinkle free! Check to see if your photographer has a steamer on set, or bring your own.
4. Consider your skin tone
The right colors will enhance your skin tone and make you look more vibrant!
For cool undertones, colors like blues, purples, and greens are great. If you have warm undertones, colors like reds, yellows, and oranges will complement your skin. Again, make sure you discuss your wardrobe with your photographer. Tell them what you plan to wear and don’t be afraid to bring options! You don’t want to blend in with the background.
5. Accessories: Less is More!
The job of the accessory is to enhance your look, not overpower it.
Think simple jewelry; smaller earrings, especially if paired with a necklace. A simple necklace works well, or a classic watch (if any) can add without being distracting. Large or flashy accessories can draw attention away from your eyes and face. If you wear glasses regularly, I recommend wearing them. If you want to take a shot or two without your glasses you can. Your photographer should know how to avoid glare but make sure you let them know if your glasses tend to get a lot of glare.
6. Hair and Makeup
You want to look like your best self! Your hair and your makeup should look natural. If you’re planning on getting a haircut before your shoot, I recommend giving it a week or so to settle before your session. Your makeup should be natural yet enhance your features, especially your eyes. I would avoid heavy makeup, or experimenting with different looks. Men can benefit from a little powder as well for some shine control.
Don’t be afraid to use a makeup artist! Sometimes photographers work with one. I do! :) Make sure to discuss the look you’re going for to ensure you feel comfortable and look refreshed.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to bring options to choose from and talk to your photographer about any concerns you might have before your shoot. You can go through your options together to find your best look. Feel free to test your outfit a few days before your session to make sure it fits well and you feel good in it!
By keeping your look classic, comfortable, and in line with your industry, you’ll ensure your headshot looks professional while letting your personality shine through.
Now you’re ready for your closeup! ;) Have fun! :)
